The Legend of Walt Disney
The Theories Surrounding A Legend
Have you ever thought you knew someone, but turns out you really didn’t? Walt Disney was obsessed with aspects of the future and the supernatural during his lifetime. It helped to achieve some of his craziest dreams. It also raised many questions when he died. On December 15, 1966, due to lung failure (Markel, 1). Many theories spread about his death: was he buried underneath the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, kept in a cylindrical capsule somewhere within Disney, or simply cremated and buried somewhere his family chose? To find out what happened, let’s look at some possibilities to solving the strange conspiracy of Walt Disney.
Who Was Walt Disney?
He was curious when it came to his mind. He also was very mysterious when it came to public attention. He was a determined and bold individual. He conquered all of this and still became one of the most beloved people of all time. He once said, “If you can dream it you can do it” (Ramirez 1). He had framed the way that many look at the world around them. He made it possible for people to overcome their rough starts and make it better for them along the way. This, in time, has led to how we picture and see him today throughout the world.
The future and technology was something he was curious about. He always found a way to awe the audience with a way of how the world around him worked. He added culture and, sometimes, inventions he came up with himself. Author Gary Hoover says, “Walt was always focused on the future.” This made it easy to believe he could achieve such crazy ideas. One of his craziest ideas was creating the “It’s a Small World.” This would set him apart from some of the other inventors at the time. It was a ride for enjoyment and wonder and wasn’t of real use. It is an astonishing achievement and was a big hit. It is still in the parks today; it is nothing like any of the other rides in the parks or the world. This achievement gave him lots of camera attention due to his fame.
Walt was very mysterious not wanting lots of camera attention, which was an unheard of thing. Author Gary Hoover noted, “Despite all his energy, Walt had a shy streak” (Hoover 1). This confused many people, making it hard to believe, because he was so famous. His shy and often reserved personality was more than likely created by his past family life. He had to work very hard growing up and never had any money of his own; “His father Elias Disney would seize any money Walt would make and say it was for the family.” This created a lot of tension in his family and made many of Walt Disney's siblings leave home. Much of his life his family had grown up poor, and this made him very shy toward his more wealthy schoolmates: “Walt was embarrassed when they went door-to-door selling their goods to the more affluent schoolmates.” Over the years, he would move from place to place just trying to make a living. He wanted to move out to go and explore the world; “He would finally move out at the age of sixteen working in a post office.” This would be the start of his career at creating all of his inventions and making a name for himself. This made Walt Disney become the successful man he is today. This success helped to make him more determined to become one of the greatest inventors.
He was a determined and bold person trying to achieve everything quickly and efficiently. He could create something so otherworldly without even thinking. According to Gary Hoover, author of the article “Entrepreneur Without Peer”, “He saw a world which no one else saw” (Hoover 1). This allowed him to amaze the world with his mind and intelligence. It also allowed them to come up with bold ideas of their own. Another one of his bold ideas was creating a cartoon with synchronized sound. Author Bosley Crowther said, “Disney quickly produced a third Mickey Mouse cartoon equipped with voices and music, entitled Steamboat Willie, and cast aside the other two soundless films.” This film was a huge success and gained much attention from the public's eye especially since nobody had even heard of this technique. This determination from him helped to create the cartoons his company has today.
Walt Disney was very curious and mysterious. He had a sense for technology and the future of his company. This made his determination and boldness stand out and create the aura he had. He helped to create the inventions and all of the entertainment we have today. His legacy lives on to this day; “Everything he achieved was reflected in the Midwest and the world’ (Hoover 1). Walt Disney has made history, many people looked up to Walt Disney and still do considering the achievements he had achieved.
The Three Theories Surrounding Walt Disney
There are three main theories surrounding the death of Walt Disney.Although many people believed that all three of these theories could be true. There is only one that could be the correct answer. The three theories we will be discussing is that he was buried underneath The Pirates of the Caribbean, frozen in a capsule, and that he was cremated. There was a lot of mystery and unanswered questions surrounding his death. How he had died and where he was buried in the end? The first theory states that he was buried underneath The Pirates of the Caribbean ride. “Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966 in a hospital due to lung cancer.” (Trimborn 1) Making his death a very startling and awful shock to the world. “Disney’s death stunned millions around the world.” (1). This unexpected death created many to wonder why and how he could have died. At the time doctors and his family wouldn’t release information about his disturbing death. “Hospital and studio spokesman declined to state the specific cause of death, saying only that he died of “acute circulatory collapse.” (1). This suspicious denial from many made it easier for theories about his death to spread. The theory that he was buried underneath a ride began to get more attention throughout the world. This theory fails to address how and why he had been buried underneath this ride. Furthermore nobody had seen his body being buried during any part of the day. This theory became one of the most believed theories out of them all. Many people began to believe that he truly was buried underneath The Pirates of the Caribbean. The only problem with this was there was no evidence of him truly being buried in the Disney parks. “No one can place the alleged rumors of Walt Disney’s body and where it was hidden.” (Hicks 1). This made it easier for people to report that this was a false statement and just a rumor created by the public. Even his own daughter wrote, “ My father was not in fact underneath a ride or anything of the sort.” (Markel 1). All of this evidence proves that this theory can not be in fact true due to the lack of affirmation from witnesses. The most outlandish theory was he was locked in a capsule to be brought back to life. Many had believed Walt Disney to be a brilliant mind and extraordinary human being. For him to have died at such a young age and unexpectedly made it hard for people to understand (Markel 1). Not long after his death a news reporter claimed he had snuck into the hospital and seen Disney suspended in a cylinder frozen and unmoving (l). This crazy news sparked many to question if Disney knew about cryonics. This was a new, very fascinating field where a body could be frozen and brought back to life. Many speculated he had read the book “The Prospect of Immortality” which was created by Robert C.W. Ettinger. This was a fairly new concept to many during the time and had a lot about the procedure of cryonics (1). Walt was always obsessed with the future and trying to create something new and achievable. This didn’t seem unachievable for the creator of one of the biggest theme parks in the world (1). Making this a truly suspicious theory. This theory can not be in fact logical because there is no real evidence behind it at all. Walt Disney was in fact very obsessed with the future but not in that way. Even his own daughter wrote, “There is absolutely no truth that my father, Walt Disney, wished to be frozen. I doubt my father had ever even heard of cryonics.” (Markel 1) This makes this theory implausible and just a rumor someone had created to attract attention. The most believable theory is he was simply cremated somewhere his family had chosen. He did in fact pass away from a very deadly lung cancer. It had spread very far throughout his system when he was first admitted to the hospital. His death wasn’t that of a surprise considering he smoked almost three packs of cigarettes a day. “Disney’s staff knew he was coming down the hall because of his hacking dry cough.” (Markel 1). When Disney had complained about his severe neck and leg pain. He was rushed to the hospital. This proved not to have helped as he died on December 15 just two weeks later (1). “His death certificate shows he was in fact cremated just 34 days after finding the cancer.” (Hicks 1). This theory is by far the most plausible and realistic one there is. There are many facts and statements made by his family supporting his cremation and where he was buried. The most recent fact being that you can go to his actual burial ground in California and find the memorial set up for him. In many interviews his daughter Diane stated, “My father was simply cremated, he knew he had wanted to do that for many years.” (Markel 1). The urn of Walt Disney’s ashes was inherited at the Forrest Lawn Cemetery of Glendale, California (1). They kept his burial a secret because it was one of his last wishes for it not to be published. The three theories surrounding Walt Disney are truly puzzling. These theories are filled with mystery and wonder surrounding the legend. The research throughout the essay brought to the conclusion that the last theory is by far the most likely. The facts that were provided make this theory the only true one. These three theories being he was buried underneath The Pirates ride, stuck in a capsule somewhere, and he was cremated are all mind boggling. Walt Disney truly was a mysterious, bold, and puzzling individual and has many strange theories about him.
In Conclusion
Walt Disney was a mysterious and strange individual. He was an imagineer and created the way we see cartoons today. “Disney died at a Burbank, California hospital Thursday, at age 65. on December 15, 1966 due to lung cancer” (Newspaper 1). Three theories spread about where he could be and if he was really dead.
He was buried underneath The Pirates of the Caribbean.
He was frozen in a time capsule to be brought back to life.
He was buried in California where he and his family lived.
Much evidence proves that the theory of him being buried in California is the most logical and reasonable of them all.
